This project involved the installation of a new roof system over a seniors residence while the building was occupied. The design challenge was to prepare a new roof system that could be installed without interrupting the operation of the facility or disturbing the residents. The existing insulation was found to be in serviceable condition and the decision was made to re use the insulation. The roofing specification called for leaving the existing membrane and insulation in place and just to remove the ballast layer. Leaving the roof membrane in place would protect the building during the re roofing phase. The ballast layer was removed and an asphalt recovery board was installed to provide a substrate for the new torch applied roof system. The method of re roofing saved the cost of the replacement of the roof insulation and was less disruptive for the occupants.
